Remember losing your baby teeth? If you had a happy childhood, you probably know about the tooth fairy. You would lose a tooth, leave it under your pillow, and the next day, you’d have a dollar in its place.
It might have been exciting back then, but if you’re an adult and still have baby teeth, you might be wondering why.
We are here to answer your questions.
Baby teeth fall out when the adult tooth is pushing against it below the gum line. In some people, one or more adult teeth are missing. This means that nothing will push against the baby tooth, so it has no reason to fall out.
This is a rare condition, and it’s called tooth agenesis. While uncommon, it does happen, so it’s nothing to be ashamed about.
Most people lose their baby teeth by the time they reach early adolescence. Yet, a small percentage of the population has tooth agenesis. Some people don’t ever grow a tooth at all. This condition is called hypodontia. Both conditions can be a result of either genetic or environmental factors.
Tooth agenesis is most common in people with Down Syndrome.
In some people, it doesn’t cause any problems. However, for others, it increases their chances of getting cavities. This is because the smaller tooth is not aligned with the rest of the teeth, making it harder to clean properly.
